
Michigan Claims Third Place in Final GLI at The Joe

DETROIT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team claimed third place in the 52nd Annual Great Lakes Invitational with a 5-4 overtime victory over Michigan State on Friday evening (Dec. 30) at Joe Louis Arena. Junior forward Tony Calderone's goal off a rebound at 2:58 of overtime sealed the victory for the Wolverines.
Michigan opened the scoring 3:57 into the contest on the power play, as Calderone buried a rebound in the crease off sophomore forward Cooper Marody's shot. Marody and freshman forward Jake Slaker were credited with assists on the play.
The Wolverines quickly added to their lead (2-0) off the stick of freshman forward Will Lockwood nearly three minutes later. The freshman forward picked up his seventh goal of the seasonwhen he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, then proceeded to carry into the zone and beat the Spartan keeper high-blocker side with a shot from inside the slot.
Logan Lambdin cut Michigan's lead in half (2-1) at the 8:11 mark of the first with a shot from the left faceoff dot on a feed from Carson Gatt. However, the Wolverines regained a two-goal cushion to head into the first intermission, as senior forward Alex Kile picked up a rebound in front of a crowded net at the 9:57 mark of the opening stanza.
Kile scored his second of the night for the lone goal of the second period at the 13:42 mark to give the Maize and Blue a 4-1 advantage. The senior captain deflected a shot off the stick of junior defenseman Sam Piazza from the point.
Michigan State scored three unanswered goals in the final period to tie it four apiece. MSU kicked off the scoring barrage with a power-play goal seven seconds into the stanza by Mason Appleton, followed nearly five minutes later with a Carson Gatt goal from the point to cut. The tying goal came with 2:58 remaining in contest, when JT Stenglein received a pass in front of the net and beat senior netminder Zach Nagelvoort on his blocker side.
Michigan was four of five on the penalty kill while converting one of two power-play chances.
Nagelvoort made a season-high 40 saves in the winning effort while picking up his third win of the season.
Michigan improves to 159-131-19 against Michigan State, while the 309th matchup is the most against any other program.
The win improves the Wolverines to 58-36-1 all-time in the Great Lakes Invitational, and 10-6-1 in the third place game of the tournament. Michigan's record at Joe Louis Arena is now 106-52-5, and U-M will play at least two more contests (Michigan State, Feb. 10; Big Ten Tournament, March 16-18) in the final season of the iconic arena in Detroit.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 13, when they travel to Minnesota in a rematch of last season's Big Ten Tournament championship. The Wolverines ousted the Gophers in their last matchup, 5-2, to claim their first Big Ten Tournament championship while also claiming the season series (3-2).
