MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team was unable to mount a comeback attempt, falling, 5-2, to ninth-ranked Minnesota in Big Ten Conference hockey action on Friday night (Jan. 13) at Mariucci Arena.
Michigan opened the scoring 8:57 into the contest when senior forward Evan Allen fed classmate Max Shuart with a pass to the left hashmark of the slot for his first goal of the season.
The Gophers responded with three unanswered goals within the final five minutes of the first period to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
While killing its second penalty of the game, the Maize and Blue proceeded to score its NCAA-leading sixth shorthanded goal of the season. Sophomore forward Brendan Warren picked up a turnover in front of the Minnesota net to pot his second goal of the campaign.
The one-goal deficit was short lived, however, as the Gophers picked up their fourth goal of the night with 1:58 remaining in the second period when Tyler Sheehy buried a rebound in front of the Wolverines net.
Minnesota added another to their lead, capitalizing on a two-man advantage at the 11:25 mark of the third period, as Sheehy scored his second of the game.
Senior net minder Zach Nagelvoort registered 40 saves in the losing effort. Michigan went 5-of-6 on the penalty kill and now is at 86 percent on the season on the penalty kill.
With the loss, Michigan falls to 123-137-15 all-time against the Gophers, who are the Wolverines' second-oldest rivalry, dating back to 1923.
The Wolverines will be back in action on tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 14) to conclude their weekend Big Ten series with Minnesota. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST at Mariucci Arena.
