
Wolverines Put Up Season High in Points to Thump MDES

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team scored a season-high 98 points, led by a game-high 21 points from Derrick Walton Jr., to defeat Maryland Eastern Shore, 98-49, on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 17) inside Crisler Center. The 49-point victory is a season high and the 10th-largest margin of victory in program history.
The Wolverines shot a season-high 65 percent (34-for-52) from the field, shooting better than 60 percent for the first time since last year's meeting with Youngstown State (61 percent, Dec. 19, 2015).
Michigan shot 50 percent or better from the field for the third straight game and sixth time this season. U-M also hit more than 10 three-pointers for the sixth time this season, shooting a season-high 57 percent (12-for-21). Michigan recorded a season-high 28 assists as a team, assisting on 28-of-34 made field goals. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman dished out a career-high 10 assists to lead U-M.
In addition to Walton's game-high 21 points that included 5-of-7 shooting from three-point land, he also added six rebounds and five assists. Duncan Robinson scored a season-high 17 points, and D.J. Wilson added a season-high 16 points. Zak Irvin rounded out the players in double figures with 11 points.
Michigan led 6-2 early, compliments of back-to-back threes from Irvin and Walton to open the game, before the Wolverines went on a 13-0 run to take a 17-point lead, 19-2, with 15:36 remaining in the first half. Wilson had five straight point during that run, including a highlight dunk over a defender in transition that got the Crisler crowd on its feet. Wilson was fouled on the play and sunk the free throw, and then Walton hit his second three-pointer to cap the 13-0 run.

With 9:18 to go in the opening half, the Maize and Blue led 28-13, and then U-M scored 12 unanswered points to more than triple MDES's total points, 40-13, at the 5:20 mark. The Wolverines maintained their 27-point lead in the final minutes of the half, taking a 49-22 lead into the halftime break.
Wilson had two more powerful dunks in the early minutes of the second half to put U-M up by 30, 56-36, with 17:07 left to play. Following the second media timeout (11:33), where Michigan led 68-36, Walton drained another three, and then Robinson scored nine straight points to cap a 12-0 run, and the Wolverines led 80-36, with 9:11 left.

Down the stretch, several Michigan players saw quality minutes off the bench. Overall, Michigan got 24 points from its bench, highlighted by two dunks from Ibi Watson, five points from Mark Donnal and Fred Wright-Jones' first career points on a three-pointer that gave U-M its largest lead of the afternoon, 98-48, with 2:40 to play.
