Fahey and Najarian Win Doubles Backdraw at National Indoors

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Sophomore Kate Fahey and junior Alex Najarian of the University of Michigan women's tennis team teamed up to win the doubles consolation draw of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday (Nov. 6) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Fahey and Najarian wrapped up their second title of the fall season, defeating Blair Shankle and Elizabeth Profit of Baylor in the final match, 6-1, 6-2. The U-M pair rebounded from a loss on the first day of competition to the eventual champion from Kentucky to win three straight matches to win another title.
Fahey and Najarian also competed in the singles main draw by virtue of their performances at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Both lost their first-round match, but Fahey made a run to the semifinals of the backdraw before dropping a three-set match to Miami's Sinead Lohan.
Completing the Michigan contingent at the national tournament was the doubles pair of sophomore Brienne Minor and Mira Ruder-Hook. The pair dropped their first match in the main draw but won a pair of consolation matches to wrap up a 2-1 mark at the tournament.
This tournament concluded the fall portion of the season. U-M will have one more tournament, the Michigan Invitational, before turning its attention to dual-match play. The Wolverines will host the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 14-16, at the Varsity Tennis Center.
