
Wolverines Win Six Singles Matches at Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up one doubles victory and six singles wins on the first day of action at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 14) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The No. 4-ranked doubles duo of junior Alex Najarian and sophomore Kate Fahey grabbed Michigan's lone doubles win of the day, jumping out to a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-1 win over Tennessee's Brittany Lindl and Eve Repic.
The Maize and Blue was solid in singles action, as U-M rallied for six wins over DePaul. Freshman Valeria Patiuk got it going for Michigan, racing to a 6-1, 6-2 win in her first collegiate action.
Sophomore Brienne Minor followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win of her own, with junior Mira Ruder-Hook coming through moments later with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Fahey grabbed a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 87 Yulia Shupenia, as the Wolverine sophomore broke for the win in the final game of the second set.
Freshman Chiara Lommer completed a comeback win at the No. 4 spot, recovering from a first-set loss for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win. After dropping the first set, Lommer raced out to big leads in both of the final sets to grab the win.
Najarian completed Michigan's day with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) win over Patricia Lancranjan. Najarian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third before falling behind, 5-3. Najarian won on her serve to get back within a game at 5-4 and fought off a match point to tie the set at 5-5. She won again for a 6-5 lead, but Lancranjan held to send the set to a tiebreaker.
Najarian won the first two points of the breaker to gain control. Lancranjan got within a point at 4-3, but Najarian took the final three points for the 7-4 win.
U-M is back in action tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 15) for the second day of the Michigan Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines begin doubles play at 1 p.m., with singles to follow.
