CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team placed three players on the 2016 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-West Region teams, the organization announced Tuesday (Nov. 29). Junior Katie Trombetta was selected to the first team, while graduate student Esther de Leijer and junior Sam Swenson garnered second-team recognition.
The 2016 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Regional Players of the Year will be announced on Thursday (Dec. 1), while All-America teams will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
Trombetta, a 2016 All-Big Ten first team and All-Tournament Team selection, earned All-West Region honors for the second time in her career, adding to last season's second-team nod. She posted three goals and three assists on the season as a key member of U-M's offensive -- and defensive -- corner unit. The Wolverines' field general, who split time between center back and center mid, she also anchored a defensive unit that posted a 1.36 goals-against average and just 9.1 shots allowed per game.
De Leijer, who joined U-M as a graduate student with two years of eligibility this season, netted All-West Region second-team honors in her first collegiate season. A Big Ten All-Tournament Team selection, she ranked among the Wolverines' scoring leaders with five goals and five assists this season.
Swenson also earned repeat All-West Region honors, garnering second-team recognition to pair with her first-team nod in 2015. The region boasted three of the nation's top goalkeepers this season with Swenson, Stanford's Kelsey Bing and Louisville's Ayeisha McFerran all listing top 10 in both goals-against average and save percentage. Swenson ranked eighth nationally in goals-against average (1.32) and ninth in 750 save percentage (.750). She posted an 11-6 record and contributed to five shutout wins, including three complete-game efforts. A 2015 NFHCA All-American, she is also a two-time All-Big Ten honoree, earning second team honors this season.
The Wolverines wrapped up the 2016 season with a 12-8 record, including a 5-3 mark in Big Ten Conference games, en route to the program's 13th NCAA Tournament appearance.
