ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated Lake Superior State, 4-1, in Saturday night's (Nov. 26) contest at Yost Ice Arena. Three unanswered goals pushed the Wolverines to earn a split of the weekend series.
Michigan, looking to bounce back from Friday's (Nov. 25) defeat, came out flying, taking advantage of two Laker turnovers and creating scoring chances. The second turnover resulted in Tony Calderone getting credit for his sixth goal of the season 4:10 into the first period when the puck found its way across the goal line during a scuffle in front of the net. Calderone's goal marked the first time this season he has scored in back-to-back games, being Michigan's lone goal scorer in Friday's contest.
Michigan controlled the tempo of the first period, outshooting Lake Superior State, 12-5, and held the shooting margin, 9-1, as late as 6:09 into the period. The Lakers evened the score when C.J. Hayes tied the game at one apiece off a Wolverine defensive turnover 15:17 into the first period.
The second period began with the score tied at one until Nolan De Jong was set up by Brendan Warren at the top of the faceoff circle and snuck a wrist shot past Lakers goalie Gordon Defiel, giving Michigan the lead once again. The goal is De Jong's second of the season and marked a stretch of recording a point in three of his last four games.
Michigan's Zach Nagelvoort stopped all nine shots he faced in the second period and finished stopping 22 in 23 chances. He also had help in front of him as the Wolverines recorded eight blocked shots in the second period to contribute to their 18 total for the game. Additionally, Cutler Martin made a great play to steer away a Lakers pass through the crease at 6:56 into the period to hold on to the lead.
Michigan added an insurance goal 6:59 into the third period thanks to James Sanchez taking the puck off an errant breakout pass and firing a shot past Defiel -- giving Sanchez his third of the season. Michigan played with high intensity after that starting with a big hit by Alex Kile on his defensive blue line that led to Kile hitting the post with a shot on the ensuing offensive zone attack. Michigan kept the pressure on the remainder of the period as Nicholas Boka finished the Lakers off with an empty-net goal -- the first of his collegiate career.
Michigan was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, which extended its season PK rate to 59-for-64 (92.2).
With the win, U-M splits the weekend series with Lake Superior State and improved to 62-48-7 all-time against the Lakers in a series that dates back to 1973.
The Wolverines are off until Thursday, Dec. 1, when they head to State College, Pennsylvania, to play a weekend series with Penn State to kick off conference play.
