ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team placed three players on the All-Big Ten Conference teams, the league announced Wednesday (Nov. 2) on the eve of the Big Ten Tournament. Junior Katie Trombetta was named to the All-Big Ten first team, while senior/junior Carly Bennett and junior Sam Swenson received second-team recognition.
Trombetta, a native of Holbrook, New York, garners All-Big Ten accolades for the first time in her career. U-M's field general, she has split time between center mid and center back and plays key roles in both the offensive and defensive corner units. She owns three goals and three assists on the season, including two apiece in Big Ten play.
Bennett, a native of Narragansett, Rhode Island, leads the Wolverine team with a career-best six goals and five assists and recorded two goals and two assists in Big Ten play, including the game-tying marker in U-M's comeback win against Iowa. She is also a first-time All-Big Ten selection.
Swenson, a native of Harrogate, England, is a repeat All-Big Ten performer, adding to her first-team selection in 2015. She currently ranks second in the Big Ten -- and top 10 nationally -- with a 1.34 goals-against average and .750 save percentage. She owns three complete-game shutouts on the season and contributed to two more combined efforts.
Senior/junior Casie Ammerman was selected as Michigan's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, given annually to student-athletes who distinguish themselves through good sportsmanship and ethical behavior, as well as demonstrate academic excellence and good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
The Wolverines will kick off the postseason at the 2016 Big Ten Conference Tournament this week at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Maryland. The No. 3-seeded Wolverines will open play against No. 6-seeded Michigan State in the first round at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Nov. 3).
