STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to No. 7 Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 12) at Penn State's Field Hockey Complex.

With the score knotted up a 1-1 at halftime and much of the second half, the Cavaliers netted the game-winning on a penalty-corner opportunity at the 52:36 -- their second corner goal of the contest. Tara Vittese, the reigning NFHCA Player of the Year, received the ball on the arc, dribbled it into the circle and shot it to the lower right corner of the cage.

The Wolverines had largely controlled the second half after tying the game late in the first on a penalty corner of their own at the 27:06 mark. Senior/junior Carly Bennett corralled a loose ball on the left side of the arc after a pass from graduate student Esther de Leijer and swept a ball into the lower left corner for her seventh goal of the season.

Michigan carried the momentum into the second, drawing four penalty corners and firing five shots on goal -- the bulk from freshman Meg Dowthwaite -- in the opening 15 minutes of the frame.

Michigan outshot the Cavaliers, 13-9, in the contest, while corners were even at 6-6. Junior goalkeeper Sam Swenson posted two saves in the Wolverine cage, while Virginia goalkeeper Carrera Lucas posted five stops.

The Wolverines wrap up the 2016 season with a 12-8 record, including a 5-3 mark in Big Ten Conference games, en route to the program's 13th NCAA Tournament appearance.
