INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Four swimmers and one alum from the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team represented the Big Ten against the U.S. National Team on the first day of the USA College Challenge on Saturday (Nov. 12) inside the IUPUI Natatorium. After one day, Team USA leads the Big Ten, 185-111.
The Wolverines made a dent in both scoring columns in the 100-yard freestyle, led by sophomore Siobhán Haughey, who took second (48.16). Only two tenths-of-a-second behind her was alum Ali DeLoof (2013-16), finishing third (48.18) for Team USA.
Those two swimmers also made an impact for their teams in the 400-yard medley, with DeLoof helping Team USA set a new American record (3:25.60). She split 50.5 on the opening leg of the relay, nearly seven tenths-of-a-second faster than her program record of 51.2 set last season. Haughey anchored for the Big Ten's top team and nearly got them into second, splitting 47.17 on the anchor leg and settling for third (3:29.65).
Sophomore Yirong Bi swam a pair of events, taking third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:39.16) and fifth in the 400-yard IM (4:10.43). The Wolverines also had a pair of juniors in the 200-yard backstroke with Gabby DeLoof in fifth (1:55.97) and Clara Smiddy in seventh (1:58.19).
Haughey and Gabby DeLoof both swam on the Big Ten's top 800-yard freestyle relay team, finishing second (7:00.40). Haughey split 1:44.02, while DeLoof went 1:44.48).
The USA College Challenge concludes tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 13) at 11:30 a.m. inside IUPUI Natatorium. The Big Ten Network will air the session live beginning at noon.
