ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Cutler Martin's late goal at the 15:50 mark of the third period pushed the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 12 USA Today, No. 11 USCHO) to a 3-3 tie with Michigan Tech on Saturday night (Oct. 22) at Yost Ice Arena.
After back-to-back goals by the Huskies early in the third period to give the visitors their first lead of the night, Martin picked up the rebound off a Nick Pastujov shot to equal the score at three apiece.
Last night's hero Will Lockwood opened the scoring three minutes into the contest when Jake Slaker grabbed a blocked shot and found a streaking Lockwood on the back side.
Michigan Tech responded to even the contest at 12:28 in the first on an odd-man rush where Cliff Watson found Michal Neville on the back door.
Alex Kile provided the lone goal of the second period when he received a pass from Lockwood at the top of the circles then proceeded to deke through two defenseman and get a shot off from his knees, beating the Huskies keeper with a back-handed shot top shelf.
Despite multiple opportunities neither team was able to capitalize in the overtime period.
The tie marks the fifth in the rich history amongst these two in-state programs, which began in 1927 and spans 223 games.
Michigan hits the road next weekend as it travels to New England for two games. On Friday (Oct. 28), the Wolverines will take on University of Vermont at 7:05 p.m. in the first matchup ever amongst the two programs. Saturday (Oct. 29) will be a trip to Dartmouth College for the eighth meeting with the Big Green. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
