
Fahey, Najarian Win Regional Doubles Title; Fahey Takes Singles Crown

» Fahey defeated Najarian, 6-2, 6-2, in the final singles match. A Wolverine has won the singles championship in each of the last four seasons. It also marked the third time in the last four seasons that Michigan had both singles finalists.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Kate Fahey paired with junior Alex Najarian to win the doubles main draw championship before knocking Najarian off in the singles championship as the University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up its participation in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Tuesday (Oct. 25) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Fahey and Najarian teamed up for the doubles title on Monday (Oct. 24), knocking off Monica Robinson and Brooke Broda of Notre Dame, 8-1. In a match featuring just nine games, seven of the games were decided on a deuce point that went Michigan's favor.
Fahey defeated Najarian on Tuesday morning for the singles crown, taking early breaks in both sets for the 6-2, 6-2 win.
With the wins, Michigan's doubles team has qualified for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, while Fahey punched her singles ticket to the tourney.
In addition to Najarian and Fahey, freshman Chiara Lommer made a run to the singles semifinals before falling to Fahey. Sophomore Brienne Minor appearead in the quarterfinals, giving Michigan half of the final eight participants.
The tournament was held at Michigan State until the final match was held at the Varsity Tennis Center with both U-M players.
Michigan concludes the fall season in two weeks, splitting up for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships (Nov. 3-6) and the ASU Thunderbird (Nov. 4-6).
