UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- The University of Michigan rowing team raced in pairs and eights in its second fall scrimmage on Sunday (Oct. 2) at Ohio State's Griggs Reservoir.
Michigan tested its student-athletes in a different way as Sunday's races were done in a head-style format. There were two 4.5k races as opposed to the four 3k races the team had in its first scrimmage against Eastern Michigan. It is also the first time this season that U-M raced in pairs.
The Wolverines raced three eights against one for Ohio State. In the first go around, the Buckeyes came out on top by seven seconds over the Michigan 3 boat, coxed by Alexis Jones. In the second race, Jones reversed fortunes for U-M as she guided them to a time of 15:57 to finish eight seconds better than Ohio State.
There were also two pairs races. The duo of Kaitlin Wright and Kendall Brewer came away victorious in both races, winning the first with a time of 17:23 and the second with a time of 18:29. The first win came by 18 seconds over the Ohio State 7 boat, while the second was by six seconds with OSU 7 again coming in second.
In the first pairs race, Michigan had three of the top five boats. Tessa Yurko and Meghan Gutknecht took fourth, while Kalia Krichko and Kathryn Grotto followed in fifth place. Krichko and Grotto followed with a fourth place finish in the second pairs race.
Next up for the Wolverines will be the final races of the fall as they travel to Boston on Sunday, Oct. 23, for the Head of the Charles.
