ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite holding significant advantages in shots and corners, the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to Indiana on Friday evening (Oct. 14) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Michigan outshot the Hoosiers, 19-5, and outcornered them, 12-2, but could not finish on numerous scoring opportunities, including seven corners and eight shots -- to Indiana's none -- over the final 12 minutes of the contest.
The lone goal came on an IU penalty stroke at the 18:56 mark after the Wolverines fouled on a Hoosier break in the circle. Kate Barber converted on the stroke opportunity, beating junior goalkeeper Sam Swenson to the left side.
Swenson, who returned to action after missing last weekend with injury, posted four saves in the game, while Indiana goalkeeper Noelle Rother stopped all seven U-M shots on goal.
Junior Katie Trombetta and freshman Meg Dowthwaite led the Wolverines with five shots apiece, all on penalty corners. Senior/junior Carly Bennett posted perhaps the best scoring opportunity on a high shot from the top of the circle late in the first half, and graduate student Esther de Leijer found the board with a goalmouth pass that deflected in late in the second half, but the umpire called a foul on Indiana and U-M had to settle instead for a free hit outside the circle.
The Wolverines (8-6, 3-3 Big Ten) will wrap up the weekend homestand on Sunday (Oct. 16), hosting No. 16 Iowa at 1 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free.
