Walton Named to Preseason All-Big Ten Team

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- With senior guard Derrick Walton Jr.'s selection, the University of Michigan men's basketball team made it five straight years with a Wolverine on the Preseason All-Big Ten team as announced by the conference and BTN Live today (Tuesday, Oct. 11).
The Detroit native earns his career conference preseason accolade and helps U-M extend its streak to five straight years with a Wolverine selected. Walton joins Trey Burke (2012-13), Glenn Robinson III (2013-14), Mitch McGary (2013-14) and Caris LeVert (2014-15, 2015-16) on the Maize and Blue streak. Walton is the 13th player to garner the award and marks the 17th overall nod.
Walton, who is 118 points away from 1,000 in his career, highlighted last season recording the fifth triple-double in program history (10 points, 11 rebounds, 13 assists) against Youngstown State (Dec. 19). The 2016 All-Big Ten third team selection averaged a team- and career-best 11.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists in his third season.
With 12 assists in the upset win over No. 1 seed Indiana (March 12), Walton set the conference's Big Ten Tournament single-game record for assists in a game. He also led U-M with 59 steals, including a career-best six steals vs. Notre Dame (March 18) at the NCAA Tournament.
Walton and the rest of the Wolverines begin the 2016-17 season with an exhibition contest against former U-M legend Cazzie Russell's (assistant coach) Armstrong State Pirates, Friday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m.
