ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan Men's gymnastics team, competing in the 150 Celebration Meet, fell to the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes, 434.900-424.100, Saturday (Jan. 30) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Sophomore Dmitri Belanovski won two event titles with a 15.25 on floor and a 15.20 on high bar, while U-M notched a new season-high 70.15 on parallel bars during the defeat.
Michigan (1-6, 0-5 B1G) got off to a solid start on floor, marking a team tally of 72.450. Belanovski led the team with a 15.25 to win the event title, Junior Anthony Stefanelli anchored with a 14.75, and redshirt freshman Alec Krystek recorded a 14.65. Both Belanovski and Krystek stuck their landings. The opposition, Ohio State (6-2, 4-1 B1G), combined for a 69.750 on pommel horse with freshman Alex Yoder's 15.35 pacing the Buckeyes.
Moving to pommels in rotation two, U-M struggled with a 66.450, while freshman Emyre Cole's 13.85 on horse was the team's high. Ohio State's 72.000 on floor placed them in the lead with freshman Tristan Burke scoring a 14.85.
During the third rotation on still rings, Belanovksi led U-M with a 14.50 after sticking his arabian double tuck dismount. Redshirt freshman Marty Strech and senior Colin Mahar contributed with scores of 14.30 and 14.00, respectively. U-M combined for a 70.250 on the event. With two rotations remaining, Ohio State countered with a 75.450 on vault to set a school record and increase the lead to 8.05 points
On vault in the fourth rotation, the Wolverines earned a 74.500 to tie the team's season high on the event and narrowed the Buckeyes' lead to 5.100. Stefanelli came up big with a 15.30 for his Yurchenko 2 1/2, and redshirt senior Michael Strathern's handspring double front captured a 15.00. Ohio State's performance on rings scored a 72.350.
Michigan continued the meet on parallel bars, scoring a season-high 70.150 with Belanovski's 14.90 leading the team. McCallum also performed well, setting a career high of 14.55 during his third collegiate meet. Junior Andrew Rickly's 15.00 helped Ohio State stretch the lead to 7.650 after combining for 71.900 on high bar.
U-M closed out the afternoon on high bar with Belanovski sticking his dismount to earn him the event title and a new career high of 15.20.
Belanovski served as U-M's lone all-around in the competition, finishing in third place with an 87.05, as Ohio State's Sean Melton captured the all-around title with a 87.65.
Following the two meet homestand, U-M now hits the road until mid-March. The Wolverines will trek to the West Coast for its first road dual meet of the season at No. 2 Stanford on Saturday (Feb. 6) at 4 p.m. PST.
