PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team set a season-high team score of 430.900 and added season bests on floor exercise, pommel horse and parallel bar to take third place behind No. 2 Stanford (447.700) and No. 8 Cal (431.550) on Saturday (Feb. 6) at Burnham Pavilion.
U-M began the tri-meet on rings, paced by senior Colin Mahar's 14.85 en route to the 70.800 for the new team standard. On vault in the second rotation, freshman Anthony McCallum's Tsukahara Double Pike marked a 15.20, locking in his first event title on the table in his career as U-M compiled a 74.150. Two other U-M gymnasts hit or exceeded the 15-point plateau in senior Michael Strathern (15.00) and sophomore Marty Strech (15.050).
Following a 71.850 on parallel bars that represented a season best and was led by sophomore Dmitri Belanovski's 15.050, the Maize and Blue scored a 69.650 on high bar. Belanovski once again paced the U-M effort with a 14.45 to lead all Wolverine competitors.
The season-high 75.050 floor score in the fifth marked four Wolverines scoring more than 15.0, as freshman Emyre Cole was awarded a 15.200, while a pair of sophomore/freshman in Alec Krystek and Strech brought home a 15.150.
On pommels in the final rotation, 2015 NCAA runner-up in senior Nolan Novak hit a 14.85, while Belanovski finished his performances with a 14.50 on horse.
Belanovski was U-M's top all-arounder on the night, taking fifth with an 87.40.
The full team will take a break from competition, as select Wolverines will compete at the Winter Cup Thursday through Saturday, Feb.18-20, in Las Vegas. Cole, McCallum, Belanovski and Novak, as well as recent graduates Stacey Ervin and Adrian de los Angeles will represent the Wolverines at the USA Gymnastics events.
