ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The MDARD, DEQ and DNR has recognized the University of Michigan Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex for its efforts to ensure environmental stewardship and enhance wildlife habitat.
In an effort to improve sustainability, U-M took advanced measures in areas of wellhead protection, pesticide and fertilizer handling, application and record keeping, septic system management, fuel storage, irrigation, and water use management and emergency response.
Excelling in these areas earned the baseball and softball complex certification in the Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program (MTESP).
"The University of Michigan has gone above and beyond environmental compliance requirements to prevent pollution, protect water resources and conserve energy that collectively benefits the environment," said Jim Johnson, the Director of Environmental Programs for the MDARD. "By reducing maintained areas, implementing best management practices, and conducting energy audits, they are saving money, protecting natural resources, and reducing their carbon footprint."
Certification requires regulatory compliance and implementation of practices that prevent pollution, reduce energy, and waste and protect water resources.
