NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Michigan men's golfer Chris O'Neill was named a 2015 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar recipient for Division I today (Wednesday, July 22) by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
O'Neill becomes the 12th Wolverine in program history to earn the prestigious academic distinction, joining Michael Affeldt (1999 and 2000), Anthony Dietz (1992 and 1993), Kevin Dore (2008), Miguel Echavarria (2012), Michael Harris (1999 and 2000), Bob Henighan (1992), Isaac Hinkle (1997), Ross Millman (2009), Dave Nichols (2003), Tim Schaetzel (2007 and 2008) and Kevin Vernick (1998).
O'Neill helped the Michigan collect five top-five finishes, close as the runner-up at the Big Ten Match Play Championships (Feb 14-15) and the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 6-7) and earn its first trip to an NCAA Regional in four years.
During the 2014-15 season, he extended his consecutive-start streak to 36 events over his three years after starting 12 events. He finished his third season averaging 73.15 strokes per round and leading U-M in four events, including a 17th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships (April 24-26). He fired a career-best six-under 65 in the first round of the Wolverine Invitational, the second-lowest tally in U-M history.
