Kornacki Postgame Feature: Freshman Ruder-Hook Steps Up in Singles in Win over DePaul
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With two matches remaining on court, freshman Mira Ruder-Hook clinched the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team's 4-2 victory over DePaul in the second round of the NCAA Championship on Saturday afternoon (May 9) at the Varsity Tennis Center. With the win, Michigan advances to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
Michigan took the early lead with the doubles point, locking up matches at No. 2 and No. 3. Michigan was at seven games on each of the three courts concurrently, with the matches at No. 2 and No. 3 ending first.
U-M's No. 2 pair of junior Ronit Yurovsky and senior Sarah Lee were the first off court, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead. DePaul climbed back within a break at 6-4, but the Michigan pair broke back and then served out the match in the ensuing game for the 8-4 win.
The No. 3 duo of sophomore Sara Remynse and Ruder-Hook raced out to a 6-1 lead before taking a 7-4 advantage on a break of serve. U-M could not hold its serve in the next game but broke DePaul again for the 8-5 win to seal the doubles point. The Wolverines also held a 7-2 lead at No. 1 when the match was abandoned.
Lee made quick work of Ana Vladutu at No. 3 for Michigan's second point of the day, winning 6-0, 6-3.
DePaul answered with wins at No. 6 and No. 4 to even the score at 2-2.
Senior Emina Bektas took advantage of early breaks in each set to take a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1, accounting for Michigan's third point. Bektas almost broke Yulia Shupenia at 5-3, but the marathon game went to DePaul, sending Bektas back to serve for the match. Bektas completed the win when Shupenia's return of serve went long, pushing Michigan ahead.
At the same time, Yurovsky picked up a second set win at No. 2 to send her match to a third and deciding set.
With just Yurovsky and Ruder-Hook, winner of a first set and on serve in the second, left on court, Michigan needed to win just one match to take the team win.
Yurovsky and Patricia Lancranjan exchanged breaks to open the second set, before the Wolverine junior fell behind 3-1 on another break of serve.
Ruder-Hook held her serve at 5-4, sending Jasmin Kling back to the service line. As was the case in the first set, Ruder-Hook broke Kling for the second set to seal Michigan's win. The freshman won the first two points of the game and made good on her first match point as Kling's return sailed long.
Michigan will face the winner of the Georgia Regional on Friday (May 15) in Waco, Texas. The remainder of the tournament will be hosted by Baylor University.
