ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team shut out Miami (Ohio), 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Championship to set a new program record for wins in a season with 25 on Friday afternoon (May 8) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan breezed to the first point of the match, claiming wins at No. 3 and No. 2 within moments of each other. At No. 3, sophomore Sara Remynse and freshman Mira Ruder-Hook did not drop a game en route to an 8-0 decision.
Moments after that match wrapped, senior Sarah Lee and junior Ronit Yurovsky completed an 8-4 win at No. 2. The Wolverine pair jumped out to a 4-0 lead to take the 8-4 victory.
Michigan won the first three singles matches off court in straight sets to take the win and advance to the second round.
Senior Emina Bektas made quick work of Alix Thurman at No. 1 singles, giving up just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win.
A few minutes later, Yurovsky completed a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 to stake Michigan a 3-0 lead.
With the Wolverines needing just one more point for the team win, freshman Alex Najarian, Lee and Ruder-Hook each held at least a one break lead in their respective second sets.
In a race to the finish, it was Najarian who got there first at the No. 4 position. Najarian took a 7-6 (4) win in the first before easing to a 6-1 victory in the second for the Maize and Blue's fourth point.
Michigan will now face DePaul, who beat Kentucky, 4-1, earlier today, in second round action tomorrow (May 9) at 1 p.m.
