ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A total of 10 University of Michigan varsity athletic teams have received Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA, in an announcement made Wednesday (May 20). It is the highest total for U-M teams since the NCAA began tracking the data in 2004-05, and surpassed last year's number of six.
These 10 teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Michigan is the only Big Ten Conference institution to earn recognition awards in both football and men's basketball, with men's basketball now having earned the award in four straight years.
U-M teams to receive Public Recognition Awards covering the four-year span of academic years from 2010-11 to 2013-14 are:
- Football
- Men's Basketball
- Men's Cross Country
- Women's Golf
- Men's Gymnastics
- Women's Gymnastics
- Softball
- Men's Track (Outdoor)
- Women's Track (Indoor)
- Wrestling
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 977 to a perfect 1,000.
Multi-year APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 27.
