ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference Office announced on Thursday (May 14) that University of Michigan senior student-athletes Justin Glanda (men's swimming and diving) and Chelsey Miller (women's track and field) have been awarded 2015 Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarships. Glanda and Miller were selected as Michigan's recipients by a committee of faculty and staff from the institution.
A native of nearby Rochester Hills, Glanda finished his collegiate career as a four-time NCAA All-American and four-time Big Ten champion. He was captain this past season, helping lead Michigan to its fifth consecutive Big Ten title and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Glanda was a member of a distinguished senior class that won four Big Ten titles, one national title (in 2013) and went 36-0 in dual meets. Academically, he was three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and will be a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
For his efforts in the pool and in the classroom, Glanda was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor at last month's Student-Athlete Recognition Celebration. He plans on staying in Ann Arbor to train for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials while studying within the Master of Accounting program at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.
A middle-distance specialist, Miller has enjoyed a strong season for the Maize and Blue, setting personal bests in both the indoor and outdoor 800m runs in addition to a new PR at the 600m distance indoors. Miller was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2013, and her highest conference finish on the track came at the indoor 2014 conference championships, when she ran to a 12th-place finish in the 600m run.
The Indianapolis, Indiana, native will travel to Denver, Colorado, this summer for an internship with the Wilderness Medicine Program at the University of Colorado Medical School. Aside from serving as the team representative and Mock Rock beneficiary liaison for Track and Field on the SAAC committee this year, Miller is also a four-year U-M Academic Athletic Achievement Award winner. The Wolverines are competing in East Lansing, Michigan, this weekend at the Big Ten Championships (May 15-17).
Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
