ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A quartet of University of Michigan student-athletes were named Capital One Academic All-District selections on Thursday (May 14), the announcement coming from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The recipients include seniors Richard Funk and Justin Glanda (men's swimming and diving), senior Zach Hyman (ice hockey) and graduate student Sammy Gray (field hockey).
Selected by CoSIDA members, the Academic All-District distinction is given to student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. First-team honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in early June. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 (on a scale of 4.00), have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Funk (Edmonton, Alberta) closed his career this season as a nine-time NCAA All-American and seven-time Big Ten champion. This is his second career Academic All-District selection, having also received the honor as a sophomore in 2013. During his four-year tenure, Funk helped Michigan win four consecutive Big Ten titles and one NCAA title (2013). Individually, he was a four-time All-Big Ten (first team) performer and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and leaves as the school's record holder in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. He is slated to represent his native Canada at this summer's Pan American Games and FINA World Championships.
Glanda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) wrapped his collegiate career as a four-time NCAA All-American and four-time Big Ten champion. He and Funk were captains of the 2014-15 squad that finished third at the NCAA Championships, garnering the program's fourth consecutive top-five finish. He was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and will soon be a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Last month, Glanda was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor, and earlier today, he was named one of the conference's 29 recipients of the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship.
Hyman (Toronto, Ontario) had an outstanding senior season at Michigan, finishing the year with a team-leading 17 multiple-point games and had a Big Ten-leading 54 points (22G, 32A). A first team All-America selection and first team All-Big Ten selection, Hyman was also one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, the most prestigious award in college hockey. One of the top student-athletes at the University of Michigan, Hyman was awarded Carl Isaacson Trophy with the highest GPA on the team this year. He earned the Bates/Deskins Award last spring, which is given annually to the top junior student-athlete for both academic and athletic achievement. Hyman also was one of two members of the ice hockey team to earn Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors in 2014, given to those who maintain a minimum 3.7 GPA for the previous academic year. A three-time Big Ten All-Academic selection, Hyman graduated as a history major in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.
Gray (Wilmette, Ill.) started all 20 games this season in the Wolverine backfield, contributing to four shutout wins and posting two goals and two assists. She netted a pair of second-half tallies in U-M's win at Iowa and assisted on the game-winning goal at Kent State. She is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten and five-time NFHCA All-Academic honoree, earning NFHCA Scholar of Distinction honors this year. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in sociology in December 2013, Gray earned her master's degree in sport management this spring.
