ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team dispatched of its rival Michigan State in shutout fashion, 7-0, to run its winning streak to 12 on Friday afternoon (April 10) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan took the early lead, winning the doubles point by virtue of wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The No. 1 Wolverine pair of senior Emina Bektas and freshman Alex Najarian coasted to an 8-3 win after jumping out to a 5-2 lead.
It looked like the No. 2 pair of senior Sarah Lee and junior Ronit Yurovsky were going to seal up the point after taking a 7-4 lead. While MSU and U-M were exchanging deuce points on that court, Michigan's No. 3 duo of Sara Remynse and Mira Ruder-Hook broke for a 7-6 lead. Remynse served out the match on her next serve, cementing Michigan's first point.
Bektas was first off court in singles for the third straight match, knocking off Erin Faulkner in straight sets at No. 1 (6-2, 6-0).
Ruder-Hook followed moments later with a straight-set victory at No. 5, not allowing a game to Athena Trouillot in the 6-0, 6-0 triumph.
Lee clinched the match for the Maize and Blue, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. Lee broke to go up 5-3 in the second and served out the match in the ensuing game for U-M's fourth point of the afternoon.
Yurovsky delivered Michigan's fourth singles victory of the day, taking a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 2. Yurovsky jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set en route to the win before going up a break at 4-2 in the second. Both players held serve in the next four games to provide the 6-4 margin.
Remynse came through with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 6, taking advantage of a late break in the second set. The Wolverine sophomore went up a break at 6-5 and held her serve in the next game to wrap up her 10th straight win.
Najarian kept the Spartans off the scoreboard in the day's final match, winning 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4. She held her serve on a marathon game to tie the second set at 4-4. She broke Catherine Parenteau in the next game before holding her serve again in the final game of the match for the straight-set win.
