
Michigan Suffers Defeat to MSU in Big Ten Tournament

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team was unable to post its third victory of the season against rival Michigan State, falling, 69-49, in the second round of the 2015 Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament on Thursday (March 5) at Sears Centre Arena. The Wolverines (16-14) await selection to the postseason tournaments.
Freshman Katelynn Flaherty led Michigan with 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting and tallied two rebounds. Flaherty led the team in scoring in both halves, tallying nine in the second half after contributing five points in the first 20 minutes.
In their final Big Ten Tournament game appearances, senior Shannon Smith posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and a team-leading four assists, while senior Cyesha Goree scored five points, seven rebounds and two assists. Smith contributed eight of her 10 points in the second stanza.
Michigan outscored the Spartans in the second half, 27-23, but was unable to put a major dent in the first-half deficit. The Wolverines shot 27.1 percent from the field (19-70) and 16.7 percent from three-point range (4-24) while forcing 20 turnovers by the Spartans.
U-M trailed by 24 points (46-22) at the halftime break. The Spartans raced out to a 22-4 lead at the 13:23 mark, including a 12-0 run that produced the double-digit margin. Flaherty paced the Wolverines with five points and one assist on the team's eight baskets.
