COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland held U-M scoreless for the first 28:53 of the game, building a 4-0 lead, and never looked back as the University of Michigan fell to the No. 3 Terps, 13-4, Sunday (March 29) at Byrd Stadium in the first Big Ten matchup in program history for both sides.
Junior Kyle Jackson led U-M with a goal and two assists, while freshman Patrick Tracy had his first career points with a goal and assist. Junior/sophomore Gerald Logan made 12 saves in the defeat.
No. 3 Maryland started fast, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on three goals from three separate players. The lead was then stretched to 4-0 at the 2:58 mark of the second after U-M held the Terps scoreless for over 12 minutes.
Michigan notched its first goal of the contest with 1:07 left in the opening half. Freshman Patrick Tracy earned his first collegiate point on an assist to Jackson, who took a feed from the attackman, spun and finished low to beat MD's Kyle Bernlohr for his 12th goal of the season.
Michigan went into the break trailing, 4-1, as Logan made eight stops in the first half.
The Terrapins, who outshot the Wolverines, 21-7, in the first half, opened the second half with five unanswered goals to stretch their lead to 8-1. U-M ended the run as junior Peter Kraus took a feed from Jackson on the right wing at 3:10 of the quarter and finished high to bring U-M within seven at 9-2.
Michigan went on to score two more goals on the contest, first from senior Mike Francia at 9:04 from Jackson, while Tracy added his second point of the day and first career goal at 3:38 off a crease roll finish to run the tally to 11-4. Maryland added a pair of late goals to run the score to its final resting place.
U-M will next play host to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Sunday (April 5) at noon from Michigan Stadium. [ Tickets ]
N O T E S
Today marked the third time Maryland has shut out a team in the opening quarter and the second straight contest U-M has been shut out in the first quarter of a game.
Peter Kraus has now notched 13 points in four games since entering the starting lineup for the injured Ian King.
U-M falls to 0-2 all-time vs. Maryland.
Kyle Jackson's pair of assists on the day equaled his season total entering the day. Jackson is also now two points away from tying Thomas Paras's school record of 72 points.
U-M falls to 4-10 in Maize jerseys all-time.
