LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team fell to Nebraska, suffering a 4-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon (March 29) at the Lincoln Racquet Club. The Huskers won every match of the day, earning their second conference win, while the Wolverines are still in search of their first Big Ten victory.
Nebraska began the day by capturing the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Seniors Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu fell, 8-3, to Dusty Boyer and Bradford Zitsch. Then the duo of freshman Runhao Hua and redshirt freshman Alex Knight lost in the No. 2 spot by the score of 8-4.
The Huskers took the 1-0 lead into singles play, where they gave a strong performance. In the No. 3 position, Hua fell to Linus Erhart in straight sets. The first set was close, but Erhart took it, 7-5, and then continued his momentum into the final set, winning it by the score of 6-3.
Zhu was the next Wolverine off the court, but he lost to Herrmann in a tight three-set match. Zhu lost the first set but rallied to take the second, 6-2. Then in the third, Herrmann fought back to take the match and give his team the 3-0 lead.
The No. 1 singles match was also very close, but Boyer bested Petrone and win the match for Nebraska. Boyer won the first set in a tiebreaker and then the second set reached a tiebreaker as well. Tied 6-6 in the breaker, Boyer won the final two points, taking the match, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6), and capping off the Husker sweep.
Michigan will return to Ann Arbor next weekend for a two-match homestand. The Wolverines take on Northwestern on Saturday (April 4) at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center before matching up against Illinois on Sunday (April 5). Admission is free.
