ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to six matches with a 7-0 shutout win over Minnesota on Saturday afternoon (March 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan took the doubles point in impressive fashion, winning 8-2 at No. 1 and 8-4 at No. 2, with U-M's top pair of freshman Alex Najarian and senior Emina Bektas rolling to the six-game win.
At No. 2, senior Sarah Lee and junior Ronit Yurovsky fell in a 4-2 hole before ripping off six straight games to wrap up the first point of the match for the Maize and Blue.
The No. 3 Wolverine pair of freshman Mira Ruder-Hook and senior Kristen Dodge broke early for a 2-0 lead and held the break advantage throughout the match. The U-M pair was leading 7-3 when the match was abandoned after the doubles point was secured.
Michigan won all six first sets in singles action to take control of the match. Najarian provided the second point of Michigan's afternoon, breezing to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4.
Yurovsky and Bektas both held match point at the same time, but Bektas came through first with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the top spot.
Yurovsky provided the clinching point for the Maize and Blue, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2. She won the first seven games of the match en route to the win.
Lee came through a few minutes later with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3, increasing the Michigan lead to 5-0. Ruder-Hook was Michigan's sixth point, winning in straight sets at No. 5 (6-3, 6-1).
Sophomore Sara Remynse completed Michigan's perfect afternoon, taking a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (5) win at No. 6. In the super tiebreaker for the third set, Remynse took a 4-2 lead and never looked back as she won six of the breaker's last nine points.
Michigan returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, March 22), hosting Wisconsin at the Varsity Tennis Center at 11 a.m. Admission is free.
