ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won its seventh straight match in a 6-1 victory over Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon (March 22) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan once again won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 1, senior Emina Bektas and freshman Alex Najarian went up a break at 3-1 and never looked back in an 8-1 victory.
With the Wolverines on the brink of the match's first point, the No. 2 duo of senior Sarah Lee and junior Ronit Yurovsky jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Michigan surrendered just three games, taking the 8-3 win to wrap the doubles point.
At No. 3, the match was abandoned at 5-5 as each team stayed on serve throughout the match.
Freshman Mira Ruder-Hook put Michigan's second point on the board, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5. Ruder-Hook jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and only dropped one game all match in the straight-set victory.
Moments later, Najarian nudged Michigan's lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3. Najarian went up a break at 4-3 in the second frame and won the next two games to wrap up the straight-set win.
Yurovsky provided the clinching point for the Wolverines, winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Yurovsky took advantage of early breaks in each set to put U-M's fourth point on the scoreboard.
Lee was the next victorious Wolverine off court, winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 as Michigan's lead over Wisconsin swelled to 5-0.
Bektas pushed Michigan's lead to 6-0 with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1. In the second set, Bektas fought off two set points at 5-4 to tie the set at 5-5. Bektas broke Lauren Chyphyha in the next game and served out the match on her next service game for the 7-5 win.
Wisconsin won the final match on court for the 6-1 margin.
Michigan is back in action on Saturday, March 28, hosting Northwestern at noon. Admission is free.
