FORT WORTH, Texas -- The 70th-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team wrapped up its non-conference slate on Sunday afternoon (March 15), dropping a 5-0 decision to No. 17 TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs began the dual by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. After the TCU pairing of Hudson Blake and Guillermo Nunez earned a 6-0 decision over sophomores Kevin Wong and Tyler Gardiner at the No. 3 spot, the Horned Frogs' 29th-ranked duo of Nick Chappell and Will Stein secured the initial point with a 6-4 victory over Michigan seniors Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu. Petrone and Zhu jumped out to a 4-2 lead, but Chappell and Stein responded by winning four straight games to win the match and give TCU a 1-0 lead entering singles play.
TCU transferred the momentum over from doubles into singles and won four consecutive matches -- all in straight sets -- to clinch the match. Facundo Lugones downed Wong, 6-1, 6-0, in the first match off the court at No. 6. Shortly thereafter, Arnau Dachs notched a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over redshirt freshman Davis Crocker at No.5 to give the Horned Frogs a 3-0 advantage.
Needing only more victory to secure the match victory, TCU simultaneously earned wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup to earn its fourth and fifth team point of the dual. No. 31 Cameron Norrie posted a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Zhu at No. 2 and 116th-ranked Nunez notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over freshman Runhao Hua at No. 3.
The Wolverines are back in action on Friday (March 20), hosting rival Ohio State at 6 p.m. in the team's Big Ten opener at the Varsity Tennis Center. Admission to the match is free.
