ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles points and all six singles matches to shut out Western Michigan, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon (March 12) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan breezed to the doubles point, winning decisions at all three spots for the match's first point. At No. 2, senior Sarah Lee and junior Ronit Yurovsky teamed up for an 8-1 win as the first team off court. With U-M on the brink, it was a race to the finish as the Wolverines held a 7-2 lead at No. 3 and a 7-1 advantage at No. 1.
The Wolverine pair of freshman Mira Ruder-Hook and senior Kristen Dodge clinched the point for U-M with an 8-2 win at No. 3. U-M needed just one more point at No. 1 when the doubles point was clinched, so the teams completed the match. Senior Emina Bektas and freshman Alex Najarian took the win at the top spot, easing to an 8-1 victory to wrap up doubles action.
Yurovsky wasted little time delivering Michigan's second point of the afternoon, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 in singles action.
Ruder-Hook followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 to push Michigan's lead to 3-0. Lee was the clinching point for the Maize and Blue, grabbing a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3.
With the team match in hand, Najarian was next with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2. Sophomore Annie Wierda picked up her second career dual-match win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6, pushing the U-M lead to 6-0.
The Wolverines completed the sweep of the Broncos when sophomore Sara Remynse won a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (6) match at No. 5. Remynse jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the 10-point tiebreaker for the final set en route to Michigan's seventh point of the day.
Michigan kicks off Big Ten action tomorrow (Friday, March 13), hosting Iowa at the Varsity Tennis Center at 3:30 p.m.
