ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team began defense of its Big Ten championship with a 7-0 win over Iowa on Friday afternoon (March 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan won the doubles point and all six singles matches in straight sets in the shutout win.
Michigan took the doubles point after big wins on courts No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 1, the pair of senior Emina Bektas and freshman Alex Najarian broke at love to take a 3-2 lead and never looked back in an 8-2 win.
The Wolverines jumped out to big leads on both the remaining courts, taking a pair of 5-2 leads on both No. 2 and No. 3. Senior Sarah Lee and junior Ronit Yurovsky finished first, taking an 8-3 victory at No. 2 to seal the doubles point for U-M. Senior Kristen Dodge and freshman Mira Ruder-Hook held a 7-4 lead when the match was abandoned.
In singles, Najarian wasted no time in putting Michigan's second point on the board with a 6-0, 6-0 domination on court No. 4.
Yurovsky followed a minute later with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 as U-M pushed its lead over the Hawkeyes to 3-0.
Ruder-Hook provided the fourth and clinching point for the Maize and Blue with a straight-set win at No. 5. The freshman coasted to a 6-0 first-set win, followed by taking an early break in the second for a 6-2 win.
Sophomore Sara Remynse ran her singles winning streak to three with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6. Remynse jumped out to big leads in both sets en route to the win.
Bektas, in her first singles appearance since Feb. 27 against Texas, took a hard-fought 6-3, 6-2 win at the top spot. Bektas won the first two games of the second set, and that was all the separation she needed in the 6-2 second-set win.
Lee kept the Wolverines perfect on the day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3. Lee fell in a 3-0 hole to start the second set but ripped off six straight games to take the win and wrap a 7-0 win.
Michigan continues conference action on Sunday (March 15), traveling to Maryland to take on the Terrapins at noon.
