LIVONIA, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Club of Greater Detroit held its 95th annual football bust Monday evening (Dec. 7) at the Laurel Manor in Livonia, where the 2015 team awards were announced and the senior football student-athletes received their coveted 'M' rings. In addition to this year's squad being recognized, the 1985 U-M team that won the Fiesta Bowl was honored.
Senior wide receiver Jehu Chesson was voted the BO SCHEMBECHLER MOST VALUABLE PLAYER by his teammates. U-M's MVP award was officially changed to the Bo Schembechler Award starting in 1995, making Chesson the 21st recipient of the honor named after Michigan's winningest head coach.
Chesson led the team with 11 total touchdowns (eight receiving, two rushing, one return) and established new career highs in receptions (45), receiving yards (646) and receiving touchdowns (8). All eight of his touchdown receptions came during conference play and doubled the next-closest Big Ten player (Chris Godwin, Penn State, 4). Chesson and graduate student quarterback Jake Rudock became the second-ever pair of teammates in conference history to share the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Award (Nov. 16), given to the duo after they connected for four touchdowns through the air in Michigan's 48-41 double-overtime win at Indiana (Nov. 14).
Tight end Michael Jocz was named the recipient of the DR. ARTHUR D. ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARD. The senior from Novi, Michigan, has appeared in six games in his Wolverine career, and he boasts the top cumulative grade-point average on the Wolverine roster. As a mechanical engineering major in the School of Engineering, Jocz was named Academic All-Big Ten in 2014. He also has collected U-M's Academic Athletic Achievement Award twice (2013, '14) and is expected to earn both honors again in 2015.
Senior linebacker Joe Bolden was awarded the ROBERT P. UFER BEQUEST. Named after legendary Wolverine broadcaster Bob Ufer, the award is presented annually to the senior football player who demonstrates the most enthusiasm and love for the University of Michigan. Bolden led the defense with 76 total tackles while adding six tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. In his Wolverine career, Bolden has 263 tackles, 18 TFLs, five sacks and two fumble recoveries.
Fellow linebacker Desmond Morgan was named the recipient of the ROGER ZATKOFF AWARD, given to the most outstanding linebacker on U-M's roster. Over his final two-plus seasons in maize and blue, Morgan registered at least four tackles in 32 of 36 games. He ranks second on this year's squad with 67 total tackles. He led the Wolverines in tackles in three games this fall (Maryland, Michigan State, Rutgers) and added a sack, interception and forced fumble to his resume in 2015.
The RICHARD "DICK" KATCHER AWARD was shared by seniors Chris Wormley and Ryan Glasgow. The Dick Katcher Award is given to the most outstanding defensive lineman or outside linebacker at the conclusion of the season. Wormley had 39 tackles this season, with a team-high 12 coming behind the opponent's line of scrimmage (30.7 percent). He added 5.5 sacks for a total of 47 yards lost for opponents. Glasgow's season was cut short by an injury suffered against Rutgers (Nov. 7), but prior to that he was an integral part of Michigan's stout front seven. He racked up 25 tackles, five tackles for loss and a sack. Prior to his injury, opponents managed just 726 net rushing yards, an average of 80.6 yards per game.
Glasgow's older brother, fifth-year senior center Graham Glasgow, was honored with the HUGH R. RADER MEMORIAL AWARD given to the team's best lineman. Glasgow totaled 36 starts in 41 career appearances for the Maize and Blue, including 32 starts over his final 34 contests as a Wolverine. As a fifth-year senior, he anchored the U-M offensive line to a productive season, helping to increase the team's total offensive output by nearly 500 total yards, with the U-M offense totaling 110 more points than the 2014 team scored. The offensive line also protected the quarterback better this season, yielding just 18 sacks in 2015 compared to 25 a season ago.
