ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Senior Ali DeLoof and freshman Siobhán Haughey of the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team were named Big Ten Swimmer and Co-Freshman of the Week, respectively, on Wednesday (Nov. 4) by the conference office.
DeLoof, one of the team's three senior captains and the eldest of three sisters on the team this season, won the 50-yard freestyle (22.64) and 100-yard backstroke (52.95) in last weekend's tri-meet vs. No. 4 Virginia and No. 20 Penn State. She also took second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.72). All three times were under the NCAA 'B' standard. Currently, DeLoof is ranked fourth in the NCAA in both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle.
Haughey had an impressive home debut, claiming three individual event wins, including NCAA-best times in the 100-yard freestyle (48.45) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.20). The Hong Kong native also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.31), a time that ranks third in the NCAA. All three of her times met the NCAA 'B' standard.
DeLoof and Haughey also helped Michigan to wins in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:18.30 -- No. 1 in the NCAA) and 400-yard medley relay (3:37.06) and second-place finishes on the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.04) and 200-yard medley relay (1:40.36).
The next competition for the swimmers is AT&T Winter Nationals, set to be held Dec. 2-5 in Federal Way, Washington.
