LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Five members of the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team were in action this weekend at the USC Diving Invitational, which wrapped up Sunday (Nov. 15) at the Uytengsu Aquatic Center.
"The reason we're out here is to compete tower," Michigan head diving coach Mike Hilde said. "We wanted to get an early competition in. To have two girls get their NCAA Zone cuts is a great step. Having this meet outdoors, with the cold and wind, can be challenging, but I thought our team showed a lot of mental toughness. We'll go back to Ann Arbor, analyze the things we need to work on and get ourselves ready for the second half of the season."
Juniors Allie Murphy and Keegan McCaffrey met the NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standard on platform on Sunday (Nov. 15), finishing fourth (465.85) and sixth (459.95), respectively. The divers met the standard in both preliminaries and finals. Murphy led the team on three-meter with a fifth-place finish (517.05), while McCaffrey was sixth (477.15), both team highs.
Joining Murphy and McCaffrey with top-10 finishes include fifth-year senior Nicole Honey on one-meter (9th, 456.85) and platform (9th, 442.30), senior Elena Ghormley on one-meter (8th, 459.95) and sophomore Dani VanderZwaag on platform (8th, 443.55).
The Michigan swimmers will be in action next at AT&T Winter Nationals, set to be held Dec. 2-6 in Federal Way, Washington. Because this is an Olympic year, the meet will be held in long-course meters (50-meter pool). There will be a short-course yards (25 yards) time trial held on Dec. 6. Event preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. PST each morning, with event finals starting at 6 p.m.
