DALLAS, Texas -- Heavy rain, unplayable course conditions and potential flooding resulting from effects of Hurricane Patricia forced the cancellation of the University of Michigan men's golf team's fall finale at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate today (Friday, Oct. 23).
The 54-hole event, hosted by Baylor at the Royal Oaks Country Club, was scheduled for Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 26-27). The event is cancelled and will not be rescheduled. Currently, the Wolverines will not have a fall season make-up event and will look to replace the tournament during the spring season.
With the cancellation, the Maize and Blue concluded its record-breaking fall season posting three top-five finishes in its four events, including three straight. The Wolverines finished as the runner-up at the Windon Memorial Classic (Sept. 27-28), third at the Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 21-22) and fifth at the MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 12-13).
This fall, Michigan tallied a U-M team single-round record 272 (-12) in the first round of the MacKenzie Invitational, lowering by three shots. With the round pacing the Wolverines play, they recorded a U-M 54-hole team tournament record 824 (-28) at the MacKenzie, lowering the U-M record by 15 shots.
Kyle Mueller has had a blistering fall with three straight top-five finishes. He tied the U-M single-round record with a 64 (-7) in the second round of the MacKenzie Invitational with 11 pars and seven birdies. With the record round,, he became the first Wolverine to crack 200 in a 54-hole event, posting a 198 (-15) at the MacKenzie and setting the U-M 54-hole tournament by four shots. He leads U-M with a record pace 70.67 per-round average.
Behind Mueller, Chris O'Neill closed his fall season with three straight top-10 individual finishes. With five sub-par rounds -- including a season-best 66 (-5) in the first round of the MacKenzie -- he is averaging nearly two shots better than any of his three previous seasons -- 71.33.
Michigan will now enter into its winter break and will not see tournament action until February when the Wolverines compete in the annual Big Ten Match Play Championship. The 2016 conference match-play event will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida.
