ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Brienne Minor of the University of Michigan women's tennis team came back from a 5-1 hole in the final set to win the ITA Midwest Regional Championships singles title over Northwestern's Maddie Lipp (3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3)) on Tuesday (Oct. 27) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverine freshman went down 5-1 in the third before ripping off five straight games to go up 6-5, giving her the chance to serve out the match. Minor held a match point and then a deuce point, but Lipp won the final two points of the game to send the set to a breaker. Minor won three of the tiebreaker's first four points to take control, eventually winning it, 7-3, for the title.
Lipp took the first set from Minor, 6-3. In a set that featured multiple breaks of serve, Minor had a break point in the set's seventh game to get back on serve. Lipp's forehand found the tape and dribbled over, saving the break point and then taking the game on the ensuing point. Both players held serve the rest of the way in the 6-3 win for Lipp.
Minor jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, before Lipp tied it at 5-5. Minor fought off a break and a deuce point in the next game to hold her serve, taking a 6-5 lead. Lipp held serve to send the frame to a tiebreaker, where Minor raced out to a 5-1 lead en route to a 7-5 breaker win.
With her singles win today, Minor has received the region's automatic bid to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships (Nov. 12-15).
Freshman Kate Fahey made a run to the quarterfinals of the main draw before falling to Lipp. Sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook also made a run in the main draw, advancing to the third round.
In doubles, Ruder-Hook and Minor made a run to the quarterfinals, falling to eventual runner-ups Ferny Angeles Paz and Sandy Niehaus of Ohio State.
Michigan continues fall action Nov. 6-8 at the UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
