THIS WEEK
Friday, Oct. 23 -- at the EMU Classic (Dexter, Mich.), 4:30 p.m.
Coming off an impressive team win at Pre-Nats, the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team takes a short trip to the Dexter Mills Metropark, the site of the formerly U-M-hosted Michigan Open. It is the second Eastern Michigan-hosted event of the fall, after the EMU Celebration kicked off the season.
Michigan will have a number of athletes in competition, including eight in uniform. The 5K race will prove to be a useful measuring stick for the Maize and Blue, particularly for young team members who have not had the opportunity to crack the varsity lineup to this point.
THINGS TO KNOW
This weekend marks the last meet before the upcoming Big Ten Championships are held in a little more than one week (Nov. 1). The site for the conference postseason event is the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course on the north side of Chicago, Illinois, where Northwestern University is hosting the meet.
Junior Erin Finn has led the team in the last nine scoring meets in which she has competed, dating to her freshman campaign in 2013. She was rewarded with her fifth career Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday (Oct. 21).
U-M has won three straight scored meets this season, including last week's NCAA Pre-Nationals meet, where it defeated four top-10 teams and seven ranked programs overall.
Michigan opened the USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll at No. 12 in the preseason, and the season has seen U-M climb to second in the nation in the latest edition released last week.
With the U-M men ranked at No. 5, the national poll marks the first since 2004 that the Maize and Blue have had both programs in the nation's top five.
The Maize and Blue will bring eight athletes to compete in-uniform at EMU: Laura Addison, Sydney Badger, Olivia Brackett, Corinne Florie, Ellie Leonard, Gina McNamara, Holly Petrusson and Sarah Zieve.
