CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team placed both the first varsity eight (7th) and second varsity eight (14th) in the top-15 at the Women's Championship Eights race this afternoon (Sunday, Oct. 18) at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass.. On a famed course that features several turns and bridges, the Wolverines fared well in a field that featured 32 of the top collegiate programs in the nation.
The first varsity eight crew closed with the fifth fastest split time (2:41.272) from the Cambridge Boat Club to the finish to climb into seventh place, crossing the line in 16.49.478. Michigan's 2V8 crew started fast through the first several turns in the course and closed strong with a 2:43.358 split to finish in 14th place. California (15:58.626), Brown (16:23.350) and Virginia (16:24.176) took the top three spots in the field.
Michigan's 1V8 crew featured Francesa Derteano (coxswain), Kendall Brewer, Meghan Gutknecht, Kaitlin Wright, Karla McDaniel, Rebecca Joyce, Tessa Yurko, Felicity Cain, and Louisa Freeman.
The U-M 2V8 roster included Emma Knorps (coxswain), Kinsey Vear, Susie Stevens, Adena Coste, Kara Puidokas, Haley Zapolski, Lexie Beemer, Kalia Krichko, and Sarah Hudnall.
On Saturday, Michigan's alumni eight crew, featuring several former All-Americans and Olympians, won the women's alumni eight race in 17:27.307. The U-M alumni eight crew featured Laura Dunn (coxswain), Alex Spaulding, Brett Sickler, Stesha Carle, Sarah Trowbridge, Emily Idoni, Bryna Oleshansky, Natalie Eiserman, and Shannon Winchell.
Michigan returns to action next Sunday (Oct. 25) in a novice-only race at Michigan State.
