ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team and head coach Carol Hutchins announced its 2016 schedule today (Thursday, Oct. 15), consisting of a challenging 50-game regular-season slate, including 15 home games at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
The Wolverines will face 14 teams from last season's NCAA Tournament, including three in their opening weekend at the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 12-14 in Tampa, Florida. Among its five-game slate at the annual South Florida tournament, Michigan will face two-time defending NCAA champion Florida in a rematch of last year's Women's College World Series championship series.
Michigan will face Florida State and Virginia twice at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, scheduled for Feb. 19-21 in Tallahassee, Florida, before kicking off its annual spring break trip to California the following weekend. The Wolverines will participate in the Mary Nutter Memorial Tournament on Feb. 20-28, play a road game at 2015 WCWS participant UCLA on Wednesday, March 2, and wrap up the trip at the annual Judi Garman Classic on March 3-5. In addition to UCLA, Michigan will face 2015 NCAA Tournament teams in Oklahoma, N.C. State, Washington, Missouri, California and North Carolina on its spring break trip.
The Maize and Blue will conclude its early-season tournament play at the Red and Black Tournament on March 12-13, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Michigan takes on Eastern Michigan in its home opener on March 16 at Alumni Field and opens Big Ten Conference against at home Northwestern (March 25-27). The Wolverines will also host Big Ten matchups against Ohio State (April 15-17), Michigan State (April 19), Maryland (April 22-24) and Rutgers (May 6-8).
Hutchins returns for her 32nd season with the Wolverines, who are seeking their ninth straight Big Ten title and 19th overall. Michigan returns all but three members of its 2015 squad. Among those returning are four All-Americans -- senior centerfielder Sierra Lawrence, senior second baseman Sierra Romero, junior leftfielder Kelly Christner and junior RHP Megan Betsa.
New season tickets for the 2016 season are now available for $100. All new season tickets will be located in the reserved bleacher section at Alumni Field. Renewals for current season-ticket holders will be made available in December. For more ticket information, please visit the U-M Ticket Office website.
