
Wolverines Win Singles, Doubles Titles at Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team swept the singles and doubles titles at the three-day Michigan Invitational as action wrapped up on Monday (Jan. 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Junior Ronit Yurovsky won the singles title, and the duo of senior Emina Bektas and freshman Alex Najarian took the doubles crown.
Michigan compiled a 10-1 record in doubles action over the three-day event, going 3-1 on the final day against Texas Tech. Yurovsky and senior Sarah Lee made quick work of their opponent at No.2 , taking a 6-0 win. Bektas and Najarian teamed up for a 6-2 win on the court right next to Yurovsky and Lee. The No. 1 pair raced out to a 5-0 lead en route to the 6-2 win.
At No. 3, freshman Mira Ruder-Hook and sophomore Annie Wierda went up a break at 6-5 and had a chance to serve out the match. Texas Tech broke right back to send the match to a tiebreaker. Michigan fell in an early 3-0 hole before rebounding for a 5-4 lead. The breaker was tied on the next point but Ruder-Hook and Wierda won the final two points to take the breaker, 7-5, and remain perfect in doubles on the weekend.
In singles action against South Florida, senior Kristen Dodge was the first off court with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 for her second singles win of the event. Wierda followed moments later with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 7.
Yurovsky followed with her tournament-clinching win, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 against Vera Bessonova. Ruder-Hook picked up her first singles win of the weekend on the final day of action, taking care of Jessica Cortes in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at No. 4.
Sophomore Sara Remynse kept Michigan's winning ways intact as she picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6. Najarian quickly followed with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3, as the freshman won the final three games of the second set to win in two.
Freshman Kara Hall completed Michigan's perfect day on the singles court, taking a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10) match at No. 8. Hall fought off a match point in the 10-point tiebreaker for the third set, taking a 12-10 victory for the match.
Michigan kicks off dual-match action next weekend (Jan. 24-25), hosting the ITA Kickoff. Michigan will play Yale on Saturday (Jan. 24) at 11 a.m. U-M will face either Utah or Tulsa on Sunday (Jan. 25).

Ronit Yurovsky (3-0), Alex Najarian (3-0), Sarah Lee (3-0), Kristen Dodge (2-0) and Emina Bektas (2-0) each went undefeated in singles action. Michigan 18-5 in singles this weekend.
This was Michigan's final tournament action of the season.
No-ad scoring was used all weekend long. Doubles matches were played as a six-game set, with singles consisting of best two-out-of-three.
