ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won six singles matches and all four of its doubles matches on Saturday (Jan. 17) on the first day of competition at the Michigan Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan went 6-1 in singles action against No. 23 South Carolina, winning at every spot except for No. 4. At the top of the lineup, senior Emina Bektas and junior Ronit Yurovsky each pulled out three-set wins.
Michigan's remaining four singles wins were all in straight sets, with senior Sarah Lee dropping only five sets in her win at No. 3. Freshman Alex Najarian coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 5, with sophomore Sara Remynse winning a first-set tiebreaker at 7-2 to take a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win at No. 6. Senior Kristen Dodge rounded out Michigan's singles winners with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 7 singles position.
Michigan swept all four of its doubles matches against South Florida, highlighted by a pair of 6-1 wins for Yurovsky and Lee at No. 2, along with freshman Kara Hall and senior Kristen Dodge at No. 4. At No. 1, Bektas and Najarian teamed up for a 6-3 win and sophomore Annie Wierda and freshman Mira Ruder-Hook took a 6-4 win at No. 3 to wrap up Michigan's doubles sweep.
Today's event featured no-ad scoring in both singles and doubles. Doubles action consisted of one set to six, with a tiebreaker taking place at 6-6. Singles matches were best two-of-three tiebreak sets.
The Michigan Invitational continues tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 18). South Carolina and South Florida will begin singles action at 10 a.m., with all four teams competing in doubles at 1 p.m. Michigan's singles matches against Texas Tech will follow doubles competition.
