Red Berenson became the fourth head coach in Division I men's hockey with 800 victories. Berenson joins a club that includes Jerry York (975 wins), Ron Mason (924 wins) and Jack Parker (897 wins). Berenson moved into fourth place on the NCAA all-time wins list with his 784th career win last season on Feb. 7, a 7-3 win at Penn State. Berenson passed Rick Comley, who had 783 wins at Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan and Michigan State from 1973-2011. Berenson is 800-391-84 (.660) in 31 seasons at Michigan. Berenson played his first collegiate game at Minnesota on Feb. 5, 1960 (L, 6-3).
After tonight's win, Michigan now has a 120-131-15 record against the Gophers all-time and improved to 67-48-7 at home against the Gophers. The Wolverines have wins in three straight games against Minnesota in the series for the first time since Nov. 24, 2007 (W, 5-1), Nov. 28, 2008 (W, 6-3), and Nov. 29, 2009 (W, 6-0), when the Wolverines recorded wins in three straight years against Minnesota in the College Hockey Showcase.
Michigan earned its first weekend series sweep against Minnesota since Nov. 8-9, 1991 (7-3, 7-6), also at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan's last Big Ten series sweep came Jan. 23-24, 2014, in a home-and-home series against Michigan State.
The Wolverines scored the most goals in a game against Minnesota since a 7-4 win in a 1997 NCAA West Regional Semifinal contest.
Seven different players recorded multiple-point nights, led by Michael Downing (G, 2A), who notched a new career high for points in a game. Andrew Copp (G, A), Zach Hyman (G, A), Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves (2A), Tyler Motte (2A), Dylan Larkin (2G) and Kevin Lohan (2A) also had multiple-point nights for Michigan. Zach Hyman leads the team with eight multiple-point games this season.
Hyman also leads the team and the Big Ten with 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists) this season. He has points and goals in four straight games and eight of his last nine contests.
Freshman forward Dylan Larkin has points in four straight and six of the last seven games. Larkin leads all Big Ten freshmen with 20 points (6G, 14A) on the season after recording his first career two goal game.
Michigan's special teams continue to improve as the Wolverines have recorded a power-play goal in six of the last seven games after finishing the night 2-for-3 on the man advantage. U-M is 11-for-24 (45.8%) on the PP in that span.
Michigan defensemen have recorded a combined 12 goals in 19 games this season after Michael Downing's goal tonight. In 2013-14, Michigan defensemen scored eight goals in 35 games. Downing is tied with Minnesota's Mike Reilly among Big Ten defensemen with four goals on the season. Downing (4G, 8A), Zach Werenski (3G, 10A), Cutler Martin (3G, 6A) and Kevin Lohan (2G, 7A) are four of the top six scoring defensemen overall in the Big Ten.
