Prior to today's game, Michigan fans observed a moment of silence for legendary U-M forward Roy Tarpley, who passed away Friday at the age of 50.
The Wolverines wore an adidas throwback uniform honoring the 1989 U-M national championship team.
With today's win, Michigan improves to 89-65 all-time against Minnesota, with a record of 54-20 in games played in Ann Arbor. Head coach John Beilein improves to 11-3 all-time at U-M when playing against the Gophers.
The Wolverines have won each of their last seven games against the Golden Gophers as well as 11 of the last 12 in the series.
U-M averages fewer than 10 turnovers per game and was on par with that average in this afternoon's contest. The Wolverines had just nine giveaways while forcing 17 from the Golden Gophers.
With 10 offensive rebounds today, led by four from Ricky Doyle, the Wolverines have grabbed double-digit offensive rebounds in six games this season. U-M improves to 5-1 in such contests.
The Wolverines shot 80 percent (16-of-20) from the charity stripe today, including an 11-of-12 performance in the second half to help put the game away. On the season, U-M is shooting 72.6% (202-for-278) from the free throw line, averaging 12.6 makes and 17.4 attempts.
U-M has tallied at least nine steals in four games so far season, including today's. The last time the Wolverines had nine steals or more, they picked SMU's pocket 11 times (Dec. 20).
Led by 15 points apiece from Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton Jr., four Wolverines found double figures today, and five made at least three field goals. The last time the Wolverines had five or more players with at least three field goals made was against Coppin State (Dec. 22).
In addition to tying for the team lead in scoring, Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton Jr. tied career highs in separate categories: LeVert, with his four steals, and Walton, with his three made triples.
Zak Irvin, who finished with 12 points and four rebounds, has made at least one three-pointer in every game this season and paces the Wolverines with 41 on the season. He has at least one long-range bucket in 44 of 53 career games.
Irvin has pulled down at least four rebounds in seven of the last eight games, averaging more than five per contest in that span. He joins fellow guards Caris LeVert (team-best 5.0 rebounds-per-game) and Derrick Walton Jr. (4.5 rebounds) as the only Wolverines who average more than four boards each time they take the floor.
Ricky Doyle scored 12 points (on five-of-eight shooting) and grabbed six rebounds, which ties a career-high mark for the freshman. Since becoming a full-time starter six games ago, Doyle is shooting 23-for-32 (71.8 percent) from the field
Spike Albrecht played in his 92nd consecutive game and made his third start of the season and the fourth of his career.
U-M's starting lineup featured Derrick Walton Jr., Spike Albrecht, Zak Irvin, Caris LeVert and Ricky Doyle.
The announced attendance for tonight's game was 12,707, marking the fourth sellout of the season.
