ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team took advantage of offensive surges early in both halves to cruise to a 6-0 victory over Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 7) in front of 387 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It is the Wolverines' second shutout win in as many home appearances this season.
Michigan registered three goals in the opening six minutes of the contest, including two quirky goals spread just 36 seconds apart. Junior Shannon Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland Shrub Oak HS) opened scoring at the 2:14 mark, diving to redirect a shot from freshman Courtney Enge (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS). Enge carried the ball into the circle, right to left, and rifled a shot toward the cage; Scavelli laid out to get her stick on it, tipping it behind CMU goalkeeper Sadie Reynolds.
Junior Jaime Dean (Marathon, N.Y./Whitney Point HS) struck three minutes later, at 5:15, on a high, lob shot to the back of the cage. Dean received the ball in open space inside the circle and lifted the ball high on goal; it soared over the head of Reynolds and dropped down inside the cage, tucking in behind the backboard.
The Wolverines added another on their next offensive attach, at 5:51, as Enge backhanded a centering pass across the goalmouth, and it deflected in off a CMU defender. It marks her first collegiate goal.
Michigan surged again early in the second half, scoring twice on penalty corner opportunities in the opening six minutes of the frame. Fifth-year senior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) netted both, posting her second multi-goal effort of the weekend, on a pair of rocketed shot from the top of the scoring arc. Freshman Veerle Lubbers (Arnhem, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium) and McCallister recorded assists on both goals with the stop and the push, respectively
Sophomore Sina Lampe (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Gymnasium Herkenrath) closed out the game's scoring at the 56:13 mark on an impressive solo effort in the circle. She received a long, forward pass at CMU's defensive 25 and carried into the left side of the circle. Reynolds came out to disrupt Lampe's first shot attempt, but she regained control, hammering a shot on the turf to the opposite lower corner.
Michigan outshot the Chippewas, 16-2, and outcornered them, 5-2. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Swenson (Harrogate, England/Ashville College) and junior/sophomore Chris Lueb (Den Bosch, Netherlands/Staples HS (Conn.)) posted one save apiece in the combined shutout effort, while Reynolds stopped five of U-M's 11 shots on goal.
The Wolverines will continue their four-game homestand next weekend, hosting Providence and VCU in non-conference competition at Phyllis Ocker Field. U-M will face the Friars at 7 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 12) -- the first home night game at Ocker Field -- before wrapping the weekend with a 1 p.m. slate against the Rams on Sunday (Sept. 14).

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On playing as home and the weekend sweep ... "It was a good weekend. We were on the road a long time. They love playing at home. This is a phenomenal facility and a phenomenal homecourt advantage. It's a happy space."
On U-M's corner execution ... "I was very pleased. That was one of our big goals after last weekend. We were around 10 percent in Carolina and wanted to get up around 30 percent. That was a big focus in practice, and it really paid off."
On the Wolverine freshmen ... "They've been doing great; all of them have been wonderful. We have a lot of redshirt freshmen as well; this is their first two weekends of playing. It's a young squad, but it's tight knit with a lot of skill, depth and versatility. We're really pleased with where we are right now."
On goal scoring working as a confidence booster ... "It always helps with confidence. It's a confidence booster for our goalkeepers to get another shutout. They're young as well. They're doing a great job communicating and controlling the defense. I'm pleased with their performance. It's nice to get a lot of people into the game and see them finishing. That was a big emphasis for us, and they were able to do it."
U-M Fifth-Year Senior Ainsley McCallister
On the controlling performance on offense and defense ... "We came out hard with the mentality of putting everything out on the field. We really wanted to set the tone early and just get out there and play. On defense, we tackled hard. Our communication really picked up a lot, which always helps."
On gaining confidence from goals ... "Getting a good win under your belt is always a confidence booster. Taking it forward, we're just going to continue finishing. That's the biggest thing. We know that when we get into the circle, we've got to get corners and finish. We know we can do that now."
U-M Freshman Veerle Lubbers
On today's win ... "We came in ready. We stuck to simple hockey -- pass and go -- and I think that lead to those early goals. I think everyone did a great job, worked hard and ran really hard. I think we can be proud. It's good for confidence."
