ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a match that took more than three hours to compete due to inclement weather, the University of Michigan women's soccer team emerged with a 4-0 victory over Toledo to earn its third shutout win of the season on Friday (Sept. 5) at the U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines outshot Toledo, 21-6, with 10 shots going on goal, and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks in the win. Sophomore forward Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]) had a career night, finishing with five points on two goals and one assist.
Just 5:21 into the match, play was suspended due to weather for roughly 70 minutes, but the Wolverines wasted no time when play resumed, as they found the back of the net just 1:10 later (6:31). Junior midfielder Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) received the ball in U-M's attacking third and played a ball out in front of Waldeck, who won the 50/50 ball, beat Toledo goalkeeper Sam Tiongson, who came out to the top of the box, and hit an open net from the top of the box.
Immediately after Waldeck's goal, the game was suspended again due to weather for an additional 37 minutes.
When the match resumed, the Maize and Blue struck again in the 36th minute, scoring its second goal off a corner kick. Junior Lulu Haidar (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) played the ball from the corner to the far post, where junior Christina Ordonez (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and Waldeck each got a head on the ball, before it settled to the turf, and sophomore Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) tapped it in from the goal line.
Michigan outshot Toledo, 13-4, in the opening half, with seven of those 13 shots going on target, and took a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Just shy of 14 minutes into the second half, Michigan earned a corner kick, which was taken by sophomore/freshman Ani Sarkisian (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill/Florida State), who drove a ball waist-high into the center of the six-yard box, where Waldeck was waiting unmarked. Waldeck one-timed the ball out of the air to tally her second goal of the night.
In the 66th minute, Lewis carried the ball up the left side and played a hard-driven ball on the ground to Harris, who was making a hard run into the box. Harris drilled the ball into the back of the net from inside the six-yard box for her first goal of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Hinz (Eldersburg, Md. /Our Lady of Good Counsel) earned her second start for the Maize and Blue and played all 90 minutes in net. She made two saves en route to her second career shutout victory.
The Wolverines will be back in action at the U-M Soccer Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 7) when they play host to in-state foe Central Michigan at 5 p.m.
