BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan rowing team began its 2014 fall season with Michigan State and Notre Dame on Sunday (Sept. 14) at Belleville Lake. The event consisted of two flights, with each flight racing five pieces. All pieces went four minutes long. Each school entered two full boats in each piece, with Michigan fielding 1V8, 2V8, 3V8 and 4V8 crews.
"I was happy that we finished top three in every race," head coach Mark Rothstein said. "We were right up there in every piece. Given where we were a week and a half ago with all the new freshman and such a young team, I'm very happy with our performance today."
In the first flight, the Wolverines placed both the 1V8 and 2V8 boats in the top three of each of the five pieces. Michigan's 1V8 crew won the first piece in the first flight, while the Wolverines' 2V8 crews won the fourth and fifth pieces. In the second flight, the Wolverines 3V4 crew finished on top in the first and fourth pieces.
"This is just one more step in our preparation, but it's nice to get out against other teams, and two really good programs in Michigan State and Notre Dame," Rothstein said.
Michigan will continue its fall exhibition schedule on Sunday, Oct. 5, when the Wolverines take on Ohio State on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio.
