U-M played its way to a season-opening win at the Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 6-7). With all the attention focused on U-M's team victory and the exciting individual win by freshman Kyle Mueller, sophomore Bryce Evon continued his consistent play. He began his 2014-15 season starting U-M's only home event and closing with a new career-best 54-hole tournament total. Despite the career-best weekend, he would be the first to tell you about a teammate rather than what he did. It is this attitude that continues to keep him labeled as one of the most likable Wolverines. As U-M embarks on one of its toughest events of the season at the Olympia Fields Country Club, Evon took a few minutes from practice to talk with MGoBlue.com for a spotlight segment.
On his performance at the Wolverine Intercollegiate ... "I've improved from last year, so that's something to be positive about. I was consistent with lots of pars, and I've found that that's my game. I can do that when I'm playing some of these courses and playing college golf -- keep consistent with the pars and throw in a birdie here and there, so I'm going to try and do that at Olympia Fields as well."
On transitioning quickly from a season-opening home tournament to the next event ... "We don't have a whole lot of layover time in between, but that's good because we're going to take the confidence we gained from our win at our home course and try to bring it to Olympia Fields and play with confidence there, knowing we can compete with every single one of the teams there. We're meant to be in that kind of field and we're ready to show them what we have."
On using last weekend as a measuring stick ... "Every tournament is a measuring stick for us. You get to play against different teams in each event and occasionally you run into the same teams, but you just want to be out there competing with the best and building off the performance from last event."
On playing the role of anchor for the team ... "Coach Whitten talked with me a little bit about that when I was coming into the program. They saw me as a guy that can be consistent in terms of scoring, and that changes course to course when we're traveling, but I pride myself on that kind of game and being as consistent as I can. I like to go deep, and help out the team and go under par when I can, but if I can keep hanging in there with rounds right around even par, it's good to have a score in there like that."
On how he likes to relax in the summer ... "I played some golf. It was nice to get out and just play some casual rounds. I like playing a lot in the evening, so I'd go sometimes at my home course and play. Also just hanging out with family and friends; I did put away the sticks for a little bit so I could try and relax and take a bit of a break so that I would be raring to go when I came back. I worked a little bit too, but it was a pretty relaxing summer even though I was traveling for golf a couple times a month. I'd still consider that some pretty good relaxation time."
On his path through the U-M Business School ... "It's pretty exciting. I was able to take a class there last year that opened my eyes a little bit, but now I'm starting to realize what they're all about there. It's a very special place, and it's nice to have a guy like Andrew Yeager on the team who's a year ahead of me in the business school so I can look to him and ask him what classes he took, what he liked, and he's been really helpful in terms of that."
On his focus in business ... "I'm not sure. I'm thinking along the lines of marketing but I'm not sure yet, so I don't have to decide for a little while."
