FULLERTON, Calif. -- Senior Lyndsay Doyle (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) slashed a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth against Texas Saturday (March 8) to score the winning runs for the fifth-ranked University of Michigan softball team in a 3-1 victory at the Anderson Family Field.
Doyle delivered the decisive hit after junior Lauren Sweet (Corona, Calif./Santiago) and senior Taylor Hasselbach (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) took walks against UT's pitcher Tiarra Davis. Both walked players came in to score.
Doyle's single broke a 1-1 tie. Junior pitcher Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modeno) held the Longhorns down until Lindsey Stephens hit a solo homer in UT's half of the sixth.
Wagner hurled another gem for the Wolverines, going seven innings and allowing one run on four hits. She improved her record to a perfect 11-0 and now has an earned-run average of 0.88. Wagner gave up two runs -- one earned -- in 18.2 innings at the Judi Garman Classic. She earned both of Michigan's victories at the tournament (3-0 win vs. No. 7 Arizona on March 7).
Wagner never really found herself in any jams. Until the Stephens home run, only one Texas baserunner reached second base -- Kierra Thom in the third. The southpaw struck out eight, compared to one walk.
Michigan opened the scoring in the third on a Texas throwing error. Doyle came around to score after her fifth double of the year and a wild pitch moved her to third. On the day, the senior outfielder went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
The Maize and Blue will next travel to the Louisville Class Act Federal Credit Union Classic Tournament for a quartet of games beginning on Saturday (March 15) in Louisville, Ky. Michigan will square off first with Kent State beginning at 11 a.m.
